Birds live everywhere, thriving is another matter. Our little neighborhood in Fruitvale near the railroad tracks had a few hundred pigeons, some ratty crows and one extremely plump pair of Kestrels. Of all the birds in Oakland, these rail yard Kestrels seemed to have the most attitude. They could casually skin and swallow a rat in one smooth movement without ever taking an eye off me watching them or the other off the sky for predatory interlopers. It was like watching a gang member at the local liquor store, all very Oakland. Drawn in Black on white.
