This painting is made with oils on wood panel.
When the work at hand is experimental and free-form, it is even more open to the influence of other artists' work. This Tondo and the companion piece, 'Krakatoa', are each experiments in transparent color and structural response to a revolving circular ground. The same color palettes are explored in each, but at some point, as happens with every experimental painting, I reinforce a particular harmonic state, suggested by the painting in progress, which allows me to complete the work. In this work, and in 'Krakatoa' I imposed an artificial horizon and casually adopted a narrative theme. "Furious Angels" is a song from Rob Dougan's cycle of music written for the Matrix trilogy of films. I was listening to this score among other music, while painting Furious Angels and adopted the name for the painting. The painting itself explores the relationships between successive layers of transparent colored squares which are laid down in strings attached at their corners in such a way that each square's edge has one which aligns with another from a layer beneath, creating an optical boundary effect and radiating a third color into the mix. In these layers similar colors are not allowed to overlap in the same generation and no two successive layers use the same color.
